  • Early January in NYC

Is it me, or has it been like this in NYC the last few January months? A mild New Year’s Eve followed by an even milder first few weeks of January. This is pretty crazy. My co-worker Ellie and I went for a stroll at lunch on Tuesday. We left the office at 1:00 and didn’t return until 2:00. Her excuse was that she was only following me. LOL!

Despite growing up and always being around this area all my life, I’d never notice this odd metallic tree sculpture at Madison Square Park. I ask, though, “What’s the point?” If you’re going to imitate nature, that was the most awful way to desecrate it.

I took these 2 pictures (among about 10) of people having lunch. Of the 10, these were the most interesting, with the most going on, I thought. I love “spying” shots like these, but in all honesty, it’s nothing more than capturing what we normally see on an every-day basis while we walk through the city, through our lives. A lot of my photography goal is to capture the every day.

How many conversations can you count? And, look at what everyone’s wearing! You wouldn’t know it was January 7! It was 65 degrees at that point.

A funny observation: you’re less apt to be viewed as suspicious taking random pictures of people if you have a woman along with you. Granted, she may be a crazy-sounding woman (as per Ellie and my conversation throughout the walk), but nonetheless she is a woman. My co-worker is awesome.

P.S. Has anyone noticed that all the photos for the feature articles on www.nytimes.com are “widescreen” these days?

I'd probably freeze in NY because I'm so accustomed to the warm California weather. :)

I will take 65 anytime!   Ohio has been the same.  Freezing one day, 60 the next.   Right now we're holding in the 50's, which is still 15 degrees above the average high.  I ain't complainin'!

    uh-huh

you know, just from your photo i wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between real trees and art imitating life.  maybe if i'd saw them in person it would not seem that way?  the park looks good tho, like it's the beginning of spring.  verdant colors in the middle of the city is always good, although right about now i'd prefer a little white covering everything....  the weather is really crazy.  i am not happy about it.  it should be down jacket / scarf wearing time, not short sleeves.  and no mosquitos please!  i just saw a few last night in my porch.  which is incredible.
