España — Part 1 (Madrid)

Just like the U.S.
Madrid, Spain | October 6, 2007First afternoon in Spain, literally within an hour of touching down, we were on the streets looking for food. Overnight flights take a lot out of you, but man we were hungry. You know what? Wandering around within blocks of where we stayed, I realized that Madrid is not any different from the U.S. It was Saturday afternoon, and a gaziilion people were out shopping.

“It’s all about the jamón!”
Madrid, Spain | October 6, 2007Taken at a place called, translated, the Museum of Ham. Are you kidding me? It really is all about the jamón! As we saw throughout Spain, though, the cured ham is everywhere and it was GOOD!

El Bocadillo
A small restaurant in Madrid, Spain | October 6, 2007The simplest of things, El Bocadillo, in Spanish literally means “sandwich.” Oh, but the nuances are so much more! I had one of these in one form or another for breakfast almost every day we were in Spain.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia
Madrid, Spain | October 6, 2007After lunch and a short trip on the Metro, we landed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, a dauntingly stark building; no wonder, it was a former hospital! With its 1980s-like twin glass external elevator shafts, the antiseptic building housed Spain’s best collection of modern art pieces, including Picasso’s Guernica. It was probably justly so, for that’s how I would describe most modern art. And, as with most of Spain’s museums, no pictures allowed inside.

View from one elevator tower to the other.
My awesome traveling companions: S and her youngest sister (left).
Night view, for comparison.
Anchovies and olives in olive oil!
Crema Catalan! And, what entry from our vacation would be without a food section? Absolutely not. Our first night’s dinner included, among a feast, the opening anchovies dish (I never knew that fish could get so big) and ending of crema catalan, a perfectly crisp-exteriored flan-like pudding.
And, this is was just the first day! More in a few days (or sooner), including the stop in Seville (where the November banner comes from).
Happy thanksgiving day, everyone!

yay! how fun! yes, i felt the same way about the reina sophia. i think the best was going to the prado and seeing 98347894 little kids on a class trip wearing matching colored jerseys and holding hands in front of the painting Las Meninas and hearing the little ones TALK about it! Wow...that was impressive. that's when i knew there was something wrong with the american education system!
