Mobile mobile?
Is it time to get mobile on my mobile provider? Six years of Verizon Wireless indentured servitude, and I’m finally hearing that the others (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint) have increased their wireless coverage in the NYC metro area. Is it true?
Can I finally break the chains of the ugly red behemoth with the worst phones and customer service in the world? The only reasons I’ve been with them all these years are (a) the coverage here kicks the others’ asses and (b) the “new every two program,” which gave me up to $100 towards a new phone every two years (with a two year contract). Now, they’ve decreased that incentive to $50, and coverage is better elsewhere.
What’s your provider? And any problems?

EDIT: 5/3/08 @ 11:37 a.m. — Dude, you guys are awesome for these comments. Unfortunately, Verizon service has been TOO RELIABLE in this area (in 1997-2000, I had AT&T and I would get busy signals every time I made calls on Fridays-Saturdays because their network was constantly overloaded). I guess with great service, then a monopoly of loyal customers, they’ve felt they could do whatever they want (with higher prices and bad customer service).
Does anyone have thoughts and/or problems with the other providers? I guess I’m just trying to see if it’s worth it to change carriers just to be treated like a new—and therefore, desired (hey that’s a novel idea, eh?)—customer.
EDIT: 5/3/08 @ 11:44 a.m. — Damn, even as I complain about Verizon, I can’t believe how much of an advertisement this is beginning to sound like FOR Verizon. LOL!

I can't speak for NYC, but out here in the N. and S. California area, Verizon seems to have an edge over all the others in terms of both reception quality and coverage area.
Hello Tony,
You worked hard to make your site simple yet elegant. The pictures are a nice touch. I see that you have a wide variety of observations here!
I want to help people to really get to know know God and His plans for us, especially in these troubled times."The land is swollen with murder. The city is bloated with injustice. They all say, 'God has forsaken the country. He doesn't see anything we do.' Well, I do see, and I'm not feeling sorry for any of them. They're going to pay for what they've done." (Ezekiel 9:9-10) (The Message)
I like to write articles about God and religion on my site. I hope you get a chance to look at them.
one big reason i jumped ship from verizon to cingular/at&t was that coverage was slightly better at the fringes of long island where i am. plus, better phones. i've had good customer services experience with the death star so far, and managing my account and features online seem more logical and easier with at&t than verizon (altho this is based on my experience with verizon 3 yrs ago.... which might have improved). oh yeah, rumor is, iphone is gonna be available soon with discount with a 2 yr contract -- i might renew mine so that i can experience the iphone for 200 dollars (instead of the 400+ dollars if you buy from apple store)
been pretty happy with t-mo, but I am admittedly not a big cell phone user. good customer service though, and my blackberry plan is pretty good (for my needs). I also like their online web site for payments, and they don't seem to tack on any funny fees.
i've had really good experience with verizon, actually, both in jersey/new york, and now in southern california. no complaints so far, other than their phones are usually behind other providers'. my last experience with at&t was HORRIBLE in 2000 in the new york area, but maybe they've improved since.
i'm not in the nyc/n.jersey area so this may not pertain to you but i've had verizon for over 6 years now and i really don't have many complaints with them. i think customer service will be bad with any of these cell phone/cable companies but luckily i haven't had to call them too much. one thing i don't like about verizon is their cell phone selection. but i got the bb pearl when it came out for $50 (after 2 every 2, rebates, etc) and i love it!
and i also heard that att will be lowering their iphone prices.
We've had Sprint for nearly 7 years and have been pleased enough to stay with them that long. No real issues, and any concerns we've had were addressed in a timely manner. A little over a year ago we added the wife's parents to our plan. They live out a ways and Sprint still has service out where they are at.
That's not to say we haven't looked elsewhere. My family is on Verizon and I've contemplated switching to them so I can call them anytime. Yet when our agreement is nearly up with Sprint, they swing us a sweet deal generally that is kinda hard to refuse (free service for nearly 5 months!).
Being that I can't speak as to their quality of Service out there in your area, it's kinda hard to say what it would be like. We've visited out in the northern NJ area, and even along the shore have had a good signal. Where we live at we've had nothing but a strong signal and consistent service. We have our favorite store to visit as the employees tend to seem to be more knowledgeable there.
In all reality it is more of a crapshoot than anything with whomever you go with. I just thought I'd throw in my thoughts on Sprint and the pluses we've had with them.
i really haven't had that many problems with AT&T in terms of coverage in this area. i usually even get service in the basement of the church. there were a few times last year that i left a message for homer for vice versa and we never got the message. weird. i like the minutes that rollover to the next month. although, if you constantly roll minutes over and don't use them, you end up with, like, 1500 minutes. i lost a whole bunch of minutes when i switched plans and dropped to a plan with fewer minutes.
Hello again Tony,
Thank you for your comments on my site. I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and we are all ministers of Jehovah. The best description of our mission is "warning work". Most people assume that we just want to convert people to our religion. That would be nice but few people desire our path. That was prophecied by Jesus: 13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7:13-14) (NIV)
There are plenty of people who hate God and disdain our work but that won’t change Jehovah’s plans for us.
